Infertility is often perceived as a strictly female problem, however the fact is that the cause of infertility is equally divided between men and women in all infertile couples. If a man is actively trying to impregnate his partner, there are various things that he can do to improve his chances of fertilizing that egg.

Here are secret tips for things that a man can do to increase his fertility:

1. Have sex approximately every two days, or 48 hours in the middle of the woman’s cycle. This time frame for intercourse has been shown in research to be the most effective for increased male fertility.

2. Remember, timing is everything! You and your partner should always be tracking her natural signs of fertility and ovulation. The best time for fertilization and conception is when ovulation occurs. This usually happens around 14 days before the menstrual period is due to come around. If you are unable to have intercourse on the precise day that you calculate ovulation has occurred, all is not lost! The average sperm can survive up to 5 days inside a woman’s reproductive system.

3. Get plenty of sleep and eat a healthy diet. Studies have shown that specific supplements such as carnitine andVitamin E are helpful in promoting healthy sperm, both the quantity and quality, so taking these supplement isn’t a bad idea. An ideal formulation is a product called Proceptin. You can order this online at www.Proceptin.com.

4. A bad move is to expose yourself to toxins and pro-oxidants. Don’t smoke, don’t drink, and don’t do drugs. This includes marijuana, which is proven to decrease male fertility.

5. Keep cool, and make sure you keep the old (and young) boys cool. Sperm thrive in cooler temperatures. So, avoid hot tubs and saunas, and don’t wear tighty whities or any underwear that constricts and produces friction and heat.

6. Avoid external exposure to chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, certain plastics and paints, radiation, chemical fertilizers, heavy metals, petrochemicals, benzene, or any other toxic chemicals.

7. Check the side effects of any drugs or medications you are taking as certain drugs will impair fertility. Tagamet is one commonly prescribed medication that interferes with male fertility, along with nitrofurantoin, sulfasalizine, and steroids.

8. Do you know your medical and surgical history? Hernia surgery or surgery on the neck of the bladder can interfere with sperm production.

9. Do you know which childhood diseases and conditions you have had? Many childhood illnesses, particularly mumps, can cause partial or complete sterility.

10. Watch out for a developing a fertility-impairing condition called a varicocele. This is a dilated vein or set of veins in the testicles. Varicocele accounts for as much as 40% of the infertility in males.

With these guidelines you will be in good shape to proceed with the planning of your new family. Remember that the male can play a key role in fertility issues and that treatments are almost always available.

NEW INSIGHTS INTO SPERM FUNCTION AND MALE INFERTILITY

In a feat of heroic proportion sperm cells race toward the egg and begin a great contest to be the first to penetrate the egg. Remarkably, sperm motility and activity soar as the cells approach the egg.

Tiny pores on the sperm’s surface allow it to change its internal pH, which in turn starts its tail movements. Researchers from the University of California in San Francisco indicated that this might also explain why marijuana makes men infertile. These findings could have a big effect on men’s fertility.

Surprisingly, sperm do not start swimming from the moment of ejaculation – they have only limited metabolic resources. In order to increase the chance of reaching the egg, they need to delay their frantic dash until they are closer to the egg.

Scientists have long known that a sperm’s level of activity is governed by internal pH, which is the amount of acid or alkaline content. An understanding of the method which alters this at the right moment has proved elusive. In order to increase its pH and become more alkaline, the sperm needs to jettison specific protons. US scientists have found pores on its surface which allow it to do precisely that.

Dr Yuriy Kirichok led the research and said: “The concentration of protons inside the sperm cell is 1,000 times higher than outside. If you just open a pore, protons will go outside.” These pores, or Hv1 proton channels, as they have been named, seem to be primed to open at precisely the right moment. They respond to a substance called anandamide, which is present in the female reproductive tract, and in particularly high levels near the egg.

Marijuana and male Fertility: The Cannabis theory

Anandamide is an “endocannabinoid”, a natural substance which can affect neurons, but it is possible that the cannabinoids found in marijuana may mimic some of its effects. This helps explain why cannabis use has been associated with subfertility in men.

Dr Kirichok stated: “Marijuana likely activates sperm prematurely, leaving them burnt out in a matter of hours. It is possible that the newly discovered channel could be exploited by a drug which improved the proton release, aiding sperm motility.

He said: “All of these events are essential to fertilization.” You can imagine now that we know the molecule responsible we could enhance it to improve activation and fertilization as a kind of male fertility enhancer.

Dr Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield, said: “Although it seems obvious that sperm have to swim in order to find and fertilize an egg inside the female body, or in the dish during IVF, we are only just uncovering some of the molecular details that the sperm use when swimming. Now that we know what this ion channel is, then it could lead us to either develop a novel contraceptive for men, or perhaps find a way to improve the sperm motility for men whose sperm don’t swim as well as they should.”

Couples facing the tragedy of infertility now have more and more hope.

For men with fertility problems, some doctors are prescribing a very conventional way to have a baby: more sex.

In a study of 118 Australian men with damaged sperm, doctors found that having sex every day for a week significantly reduced the amount of DNA damage in their patients’ sperm. Previous studies have linked better sperm quality to higher pregnancy rates.

Dr. David Greening of Sydney IVF, a private fertility clinic inAustralia, and colleagues looked at 118 men who had damaged sperm. Greening and colleagues told the men to have sex every day for a week. After seven days, the doctors found that in 81 percent of the men, there was a 12 percent decrease in the amount of damaged sperm.

Many fertility experts suggest men abstain from sex before their partners have in-vitro fertilization, to try to elevate their sperm counts. Boy are they wrong.

Sperm quality can also be improved if men don’t smoke, drink moderately, exercise, or get more antioxidants.

Greening now instructs all couples seeking fertility advice to start by having more sex. “Some of the older men look a little concerned,” he said. “But the younger ones seem quite happy about it.”

Experts think sex helps reduce the DNA damage in sperm by getting it out of the body quickly; if sperm is in the body for too long, it has a higher chance of getting damaged.

Greening said he and his colleagues are still analyzing the study data to determine how many women got pregnant. “Looking at sperm DNA is just one part of the puzzle,” said Bill Ledger, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Sheffield, who was not connected to the research. “Maybe this will improve pregnancy rates, but we still need to do more studies.”

Couples shouldn’t feel pressured to adjust their sex lives just for the sake of having a baby. But Greening said the study’s findings were ultimately very intuitive. “If you want to have a baby, our advice is to do it often.”

The size of the tesicles is actually predictive of male infertility in men with varicoceles. Varicoceles are swollen varicose veins in the scrotum which increase the temperature of the man’s testicles.

To compare the frequency of testicular size discrepancy between infertile men with and without varicoceles.

In a major new study, adult patients presenting for male infertility evaluations were examined. The testicular volumes and presence or absence of varicocele and the severity of the varicocele were recorded. Testicular size discrepancy was defined as a difference in the sixze of the testicles of at least 4 mL. The average testicle has a volume of 20 ml and less than 12 ml is significantly abnormal. Prader beads, in the shape of the male testicle, are used to gauge testicular size.

Of the 3927 men presenting for male infertility evaluation, 3202 met the inclusion criteria of the study. A total of 705 patients (22%) had testicular size discrepancy and 1105 presented with a varicocele (34%). Testicular size discrepancy was found to be more common in patients with any varicocele than in patients with no varicocele (32% vs 17%; P < .001). In addition, testicular size discrepancy with a smaller left testicle was more common in patients with a left varicocele than in patients with no varicocele (30% vs 13%; P < .001). In patients with a left varicocele, testicular size discrepancy, if present, demonstrated a smaller testicle on the ipsilateral side 89% of the time and on the contralateral side 11% of the time. In contrast, with a right-sided varicocele, if testicular size discrepancy was present, the smaller testicle was located only on the left side.

Testicular size discrepancy is approximately 2 times more common in infertile men with varicoceles than in men without varicoceles. Testicular size discrepancy with a smaller left testicle is more common than size discrepancy with a smaller right testicle, regardless of the side of the varicocele.
